Ditch the cable and opt for a subscription service that mail DVDs to your home or rent from the library. You can get your favorite cable series that way. What about sports? Follow them for cheap online. You'll still come out ahead than if you subscribe to the premium package.

Pay-Per-View
Instead of having Premium Channels you don't watch all the time, order a movie from Pay-Per-View every once in a while. They are usually cheaper then renting or buying a movie you would only watch once. On Dish Network you can usually order a movie on pay-per-view for $4.99. These movies last 24 hours and you can watch your movie as many times as you want within the 24 hour period. They also have a channel where you can order a movies for $1.99. Its called the last chance channel. This is cheaper than buying movies or going to a movie theater. It may even be cheaper than renting because you won't have the cost of gas to go to the video store.
